Game of Thrones: Season 7 production will start 'little bit later' than usual

Winter’s arrival means Game of Thrones cast members may receive a longer vacation than usual.

Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss told the UFC Unfiltered podcast that production on season 7 will begin at a later date than what’s normal for the series.

“We’re starting a little bit later because, at the end of this season, winter is here, and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more,” Weiss said. “We kind of pushed everything down the line so we could get some grim, gray weather, even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”

Earlier this year – and again last month – Benioff and Weiss said their hope was to end Game of Thrones after roughly 13 more episodes split across two seasons. HBO has not confirmed the showrunners’ plans, nor commented on Weiss’ recent quotes about a delay in production. Game of Thrones normally begins production on its new season in July.

So what is confirmed for season 7? The current crop of directors who have signed on: three Thrones alums in Alan Taylor, Jeremy Podeswa, and Mark Mylod, and series newcomer Matt Shakman.
